A difficult day

Have you ever felt... off?
Every month or so, the couple of days surrounding the full moon (or the new moon) always seem to throw me off. (Maybe I'm just too much of a hippie believing in all that stars stuff, but I really do think the moon influences the kind of day we have! Actually, check around you and most people had a weird or a horrible day today! No?) Usually, around those times, I begin to question everything, doubting my skills, my story, my characters, my whole darn career, etc. It even spreads to my personal life!

So yeah, it happened to me today...

Still, I wrote a scene I was really excited to write but I found myself rather disappointed in it... And soon after, I 'pantsed' into a not-so-good dialogue when actually, I think I should have used my brackets trick but I was too tired (or too proud) to even think about it! So I wrote a so-so scene instead of skipping directly to the other scene that had my attention... Yeah, that's my day today.

I swear, I even thought of stopping to kid myself about my 'career' right there, telling me that I don't have what it takes to make it into the US market... But hey, tomorrow'll be better... Right?

Anyway, I still managed to write 2 641 words today, bringing me to a total of 55 461 words. :) I hope to double that tomorrow but... well... we'll see!

For the excerpt, as my writing buddy Rachel pointed it out: she had never read a fighting scene from my book! :O So there you go, Rach (and everyone else too! ^_^)! It's not great, but it's a start! Hope you'll like it! :P

Novel excerpt

The creature yelled and ran. Eva quickly spun her torso to push Ulie back with her left arm and when she spun back, she swept her right arm in a large circle. Her wrist hit the creature’s shoulder and it stumbled a few feet away. Sitting on the pavement, Ulie did not miss a single movement.
The creature focused again and charged. Eva ducked under its chest and sprung her body back up, sending the monster flying. But it landed on its feet and charged again in Eva's back. Without a single look, Eva calculated the monster’s distance from its scream and spun rapidly on herself, her right leg out. Her foot hit the monster right in the jaw!
But the creature did not move.
Eva backed up. “Something’s wrong! Cinders don’t react like that! They just… vanish!”
The creature pounced high in the air and landed on Eva’s shoulders, pinning her to the ground. “Run!” she still managed to yell faintly at Ulie. But the creature was faster and pounced from Eva’s back and unto Ulie.
The teenager felt like she was being choked with smoke! She could only see and breathe fumes. Her arms were no good and she had lost all sense of orientation. Was this the ground under her? Or was it behind her? She was lost.
After what seemed like an eternity of seconds, Ulie felt two arms wrap tightly around her chest. She was going to get crushed to death! But all the arms did was pulling her out.
And she fell back into the real world! The arms around her chest were Xeres’s and lying flat between Ulie’s back and the pavements was his body.
            “Alright, now Eva!” he yelled.
Eva quickly reached under her jacket around her back: Ulie noticed some funny looking gloves tucked into her pants. She pulled them on while the creature was crawling on all four, shaking its head as if it was trying to focus again. Armed, Eva ran towards it.
She moved so quickly that Ulie was mesmerized. She did not even notice Xeres sitting back up with herself on his lap and his arms around her.
Eva threw a punch in the creature that had found in itself to stand again. The punch hit its stomach, forcing it to bend. It tried to hit back but Eva blocked the blow with her armored wrist and counterattacked with an uppercut. Using gravity, the monster tried to jab Eva’s shoulders again as it fell back down but the woman quickly slid to the side and lodge her knee in the monster’s belly, elbowed it in the nape of the neck and threw another upwards punch with both hands tied together. The monster stumbled back, visibly stunned, but refused to give up. It charged again. Eva crouched and quickly dragged a roundhouse kick. The monster fell flat on its back. Eva stood up and lifted her leg straight in the air, holding her ankle by her ear. When the monster motioned to sit up again, Eva let go of her leg and hit him strongly in the chest.
The monster laid back again, coughing. Eva kneeled next to it, holding it down with her right hand on its throat.
“Do it!” ordered Xeres from behind Ulie’s head.
Eva seemed to hesitate a second but then, her expression changed. She displayed pure hatred. She pulled her fist as far behind her as she could, slightly turning her torso, and suddenly released it like a cramp letting go. The blow hit the Cinder between the eyes and the creature exploded in a cloud of ashes,

  1. Wow. For the first fight scene that I've read from you, and from this story, I am stunned. I could follow Eva's actions in my mind and I saw as she fought the beast head on. And she fought like a kickboxer, with was a nice tough.
She was a total bad-ass without showing off, still protecting Ulie instead of herself. I kinda want to know more about those gloves too!
Looks like Ulie has some real competition now for Xerxes heart <3

  2. I absolutely know what you mean about the full moon! There's always the one day (or more!) when nothing goes right. Like, at all. It always takes me by surprise even though I know I should be expecting it. Don't worry! It'll be better tomorrow :D Kudos on writing through it, that's always a tough one! Exciting excerpt :D
